A Study in Scarlet

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

Dr. Watson and the detective Sherlock Holmes meet each other in London. Scotland Yard asks for Mr Holmes' help to solve a murder and Dr Watson gets involved because he's curious about the way that Mr Holmes can make fast deductions.

The story has three parts. In the first part Dr Watson tells us about the mysterious murder and how he and Holmes meet. The second part, describes the facts that motivate the killer to do it. I think this is the best part. The last part is about how the case is solved. We can see this structure in other novels such as Red Dragon and Black Sunday by Thomas Harris where the author analyzes the characters and shows us why the killer did it, and it makes us feel compassion for him.

A Study in Scarlet is the first novel where Sherlock Holmes appears.
